Karachi, April 22: World Earth Day is celebrated every year on 22 April to enhance awareness of people about the importance of protecting their environment. This year the global theme of campaign focused on educating people on 'environmental and climate literacy'. DHA celebrated World Earth Day with great zeal and fanfare to demonstrate its support for protection of environment. A number of activities were organized in DHA including 'walk for a cause' which was the hallmark of the event. Begum Administrator DHA Brig Shahid Hassan Ali was the chief guest on the occasion.

The 1.5 Km symbolic walk started from DHA Sports Club (Moin Khan Academy) in DHA Phase-VIII and culminated at Defence Authority Country and Golf Club. A large number of people from all walks of life enthusiastically participated in the walk and pledged their resolve for keeping the environment neat, clean and free of pollution. The entire route of the walk was branded with messages in support of environmental preservation. A number of celebrities including Pakistan's sports icons Mr Javed Miandad, Mr Zaheer Abbas, Mr Sikander Bakht and Minister Sports, Government of Sindh, Mr Sardar Muhammad Baksh Mehr participated in the walk to show their solidarity for the cause.

Begum Administrator said that DHA accords highest priority to the cause of protection of environment. She stressed on the need to promote plantation, greenery and natural environment for development of a healthy and vibrant society. She appreciated the efforts put in by all concerned for planning and conducting the event in a befitting manner and hoped that it would inspire people to maintain a dynamic and healthy environment free of pollution.

Meanwhile in DHA Educational Institutions different programmes/events were held on the occasion to highlight the significance of the day. The speakers stressed on various pragmatic measures including steps to reduce environmental pollution, preservation of water, keeping surrounding areas clean and litter free and to discourage the use of plastic bags which choke gutters/water outlets polluting the entire environment. The unique event would go a long way in bringing realization in masses about the significance of protecting the natural environment.
